What Is Warm-Water Extraction Carpet Cleaning?

Warm-water extraction, sometimes called steam cleaning, is the method we use for fitted carpet and rug cleaning. Here’s what actually happens during the process.

The basic idea

Warm water, combined with a professional cleaning solution suited to the carpet type, is applied to the carpet fibres. This loosens dirt, grime and cleaning residue that has built up in the pile over time. Professional extraction equipment then lifts the moisture, cleaning solution and suspended soil back out of the carpet.

Why warm water rather than just vacuuming

A vacuum cleaner removes loose surface dirt, but it can’t reach soil that has become embedded deeper in the carpet fibres. Warm-water extraction is a deeper clean that targets that embedded dirt directly, rather than just what’s sitting on the surface.

The general steps

1. Inspection — the carpet, fibres and any visible stains are assessed first.
2. Preparation — the room and carpet are prepared for cleaning.
3. Spot and stain treatment — problem areas are pre-treated individually.
4. Warm-water extraction — warm water and cleaning solution are worked into the carpet, then extracted using professional equipment.
5. Drying — a blower is used afterwards to assist airflow and speed up drying.

Is it safe for all carpets?

Carpet type and condition are assessed on arrival to confirm the carpet is suitable for warm-water extraction before we begin. If you have any concerns about a specific carpet, it’s worth mentioning them when you book.

What to expect afterwards

Some moisture in the carpet after cleaning is normal — this is why a blower is used afterwards to assist airflow and drying. Exact drying time varies by carpet type, thickness and ventilation in the room.
